March 22 – April 5

Itinerary and Notes
 

Thursday, March 22: Arrival

  • Germans arrive at Dulles on UA 953 from Frankfurt at 6:14 pm
  • Bus will collect group from airport and bring them to Pallotti at approximately 9 pm. We will meet outside the front of the school by the chapel.
  • Notes for Germans:
  • Space on the bus is limited. Please limit luggage to one carry-on bag that can fit on your lap and one suitcase per person.
  • It takes about 1-2 hours to drive from the airport to school, so if you need snacks or dinner, please bring them in your carry-on or pick them up before leaving the airport.
  • Notes for host families:
  • Text messages will be sent alerting you of any flight delays. Make sure we have a cell phone number to text in case of changes.
  • Please plan to arrive at Pallotti at 9 pm to pick up your student.

Friday, March 23: Day at Pallotti/Welcome Dinner 

  • Germans will shadow their Pallotti students at school
  • Potluck dinner at Pallotti, 6-8 pm in the courtyard (weather permitting, cafeteria if the weather is bad)
  • Meals
  • Breakfast: with host family
  • Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase school lunch
  • Dinner: potluck at Pallotti
  • Notes for host families
    • Please drop off and pick up your host student at the same time you do your Pallotti child. If your child participates in sports or after school activities, please have the host child accompany them unless other arrangements can be made.
  •  Notes for Germans:
  •   Please dress appropriately for school (no short skirts, low cut tops, ripped clothes).
  •   Your Pallotti host might be taking tests, so bringing a book is a good idea.
  •   Cell phone use isn’t allowed in school.

Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25: Free time with families

  • Arrange your own activities. Some suggestions include:
  • Lancaster, PA (Amish country)
  • Gettysburg or other nearby battlefields
  • Williamsburg, VA (colonial history)
  • Ocean City or Rehobeth Beach
  • Blob’s Park
  • Mount Vernon
  • Harper’s Ferry
  • St. Mary’s City
  • Western Maryland
  • Shopping trips
  • National Harbor
  • Newseum, Madame Toussands or other non-Smithsonian museums
  • Picnic/hiking in Great Falls or other outdoor areas
  • Farmers markets or Amish market
  •  Kennedy Center, BSO or other musical events
  • Baltimore Museum of Art or the Walters
  • American sports (professional, college, high school or informal games with family)
  • Notes for host families:
  •  If you know you plan to organize an event or activity, let us know so we can compile a list for others.
  • The Spring Gala is Saturday, March 24. German students may attend (they will eat pizza and hang out with the Pallotti kids), but please let us know if you plan to bring them in advance. Some host families are organizing activities for that night, so keep an eye out.

Monday, March 26: Smithsonian Museums

  • Meet at Laurel MARC station NO LATER THAN 7:40 for 7:56 am train to DC
  • Day in DC – visit Smithsonian Museums
  • Return on 4:13 train from Union Station, back to MARC station by 4:38 pm
  • Meals
  • Breakfast: with host family
  • Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase lunch in DC
  • Dinner: with host family
  • Notes for host families:
  • Please drop off your student at the MARC station (just down the street from Pallotti by 7:40 am). If you cannot bring them to the MARC station, please let me know so we can arrange to get them there from Pallotti.
  • Afternoon pickup at the MARC station is at 4:40 pm or from Pallotti at 5 pm.

  •  Wear comfortable walking shoes.

    Tuesday, March 27: Monuments/Cherry Blossoms

    • Meet at Laurel MARC station NO LATER THAN 7:40 for 7:56 am train to DC
    • Day in DC – visit monuments and Tidal Basin, cherry blossoms 
    • Return on 4:13 train from Union Station, back to MARC station by 4:38 pm
    • Meals
    • Breakfast: with host family
    • Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase lunch in DC
    • Dinner: with host family
    • Notes for host families:

    Wednesday, March 28: Day in Baltimore

    • Meet at Pallotti by 7:45
    • Walk to MARC station for train at 8:30, arrive in Baltimore at 9:16
    • Visit Baltimore Aquarium and Fells Point
    • Return on 3:30 train from Baltimore, back to MARC station by 4 pm
    • Meals
    • Breakfast: with host family
    • Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase lunch in Baltimore
    • Dinner: with host family
    • Notes for host families
      • Afternoon pickup at the MARC station is at 4:00 pm or from Pallotti at 4:30 pm
    • Notes for German
      • Please wear comfortable walking shoes.

    Thursday, March 29: Day at Pallotti

    • Drop off at Pallotti at normal time
    • Bus to Annapolis
    • Visit Naval Academy for noon formation
    • Visit State House
    • Time for lunch, shopping and sightseeing
    • Return to Pallotti by 4 pm
    • Meals
    • Breakfast: with host family
    • Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase lunch in Annapolis
    • Dinner: with host family
    • Notes for Germans
      • Bring a picture ID if you wish to enter the State House of Naval Academy grounds

    Saturday, March 31: New York trip

    • Meet at Pallotti by 6 am for immediate departure
    •  Flexible time in New York to spend as you wish
    • Leave New York by 6 pm, arrive back at Pallotti by 10 pm
    • 31 German participants 29 American participants ($32 per person)
    • Meals
    • Breakfast: with host family
    • Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase lunch in New York
    • Dinner: in New York

    • Return on 4:13 train from Union Station, back to MARC station by 4:38 pm

    •  Dinner: with host family
    • Notes for host families:
    • Please drop off your student at the MARC station (just down the street from Pallotti by 7:40 am). If you cannot bring them to the MARC station, please let me know so we can arrange to get them there from Pallotti.

    Tuesday, April 3

    • Meet at Pallotti at normal time
    • Pallotti bus to College Park
    • Tour and lunch at University of Maryland
    • Baseball game at 6 pm (host families invited)
    • Meals
    • Breakfast: with host family
    •  Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase lunch at UMD
    •  Dinner: food court at UMD
    • Notes for host families
      • Please join us for a UMD baseball game against George Mason at 6 pm. The game is free and free parking is available after 4 pm on campus.
    • Notes for Germans:

      • Wear comfortable walking shoes.
      • Bring sports equipment for games on campus.

      Wednesday, April 4: Day at Pallotti/Farewell Dinner

      • Germans will shadow their Pallotti students at school
      • Pizza party at Pallotti, 6-8 pm in the courtyard (weather permitting, cafeteria if the weather is bad)
      • Meals:
      • Breakfast: with host family
      • Lunch: bagged lunch or purchase school lunch
      • Dinner: pizza farewell party at Pallotti
      • Notes for host families
        • Please drop off and pick up your host student at the same time you do your Pallotti child. If your child participates in sports or after school activities, please have the host child accompany them unless other arrangements can be made.
      • Notes for Germans:
      • Please dress appropriately for school (no short skirts, low cut tops, ripped clothes).

      Thursday, April 5: Departure

      • Germans depart from Dulles on UA 952 to Frankfurt at 6:58 pm
      • Bus will collect group from Pallotti and take them to the airport at 2 pm. We will meet outside the front of the school by the chapel.
      • Notes for Germans:
      • Space on the bus is limited. Please limit luggage to one carry-on bag that can fit on your lap and one suitcase per person.
      • It takes about 1-2 hours to drive from school to the airport, so if you need snacks or dinner, please bring them in your carry-on.
